Google Workspace users will now have the ability to create images of people using Gemini, as announced by the company on Friday. This new functionality is included in the recent Workspace update from the Mountain View-based tech giant, which also introduces a few additional artificial intelligence (AI) features. Notably, the tech giant had previously retracted Gemini’s capability to produce images featuring people in February 2024 after the AI model was observed generating incorrect and biased images, which could potentially amplify the threat of deepfakes.
Google Workspace Is Getting New Features
In a blog entry, the tech giant unveiled new functionalities for Google Workspace users. Previously, the company had removed the Gemini add-on and incorporated the AI features within the Workspace subscription. Now, it is beginning to deploy the initial range of Gemini features to all of its paying subscribers.
Among these, the most significant is Gemini’s ability to create images including people. This function is powered by the Imagen 3 AI model. After retracting the feature, Google brought back the capability in early access in August 2024. At that time, the company mentioned that it had implemented built-in precautions to reduce the risk of deepfakes. Furthermore, SynthID is also being utilized to watermark the images produced by AI.
Google announced that Workspace users will now be capable of generating images of people in the Gemini mobile applications as well as through Gemini Advanced. The feature will also function within the side panel of Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, Slides, and Gmail. This functionality is currently being rolled out and is anticipated to reach all eligible users worldwide by March 1. Those using the free tiers are still unable to create images of people.
Another new functionality being launched with the update is the option to insert Gemini responses directly into email drafts in the Gmail app. Users can now access Gemini in the Gmail app and pose a question to the chatbot regarding the email or the inbox. Once the response is generated, they can tap the insert arrow on Android or the Insert button on iOS to swiftly incorporate the response. This feature was notably first reported last month.
Lastly, the tech giant is also launching quick commands in the Google Chat app for enterprises. This is designed for developers, who will now have the ability to invoke an app command straight away without needing to type the slash command. These commands can be set up via the Chat application programming interface (API) page and can be accessed by clicking the plus button next to the compose box.
