Threads — Instagram’s micro-platform and X (formerly Twitter) competitor — is rolling out a new feature that lets users see if others are online. Other Meta social media apps like Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook have similar functionality, and Threads is the latest addition. As with access to other applications, users who have this feature enabled can see the activity status of other users.
Functional Status Indicator in Threads
In a post on Threads, Platform President Adam Mussery announced the launch of this feature on the micro platform. It’s being introduced as a “way to find others to interact with” in real time, the official said. The idea is that the action tag can join conversations by knowing that others are online.
This feature is enabled in threads, allowing users to see the online status of others. In addition, according to Threads, it does not affect the performance indicator available on Instagram. Both functions work independently of each other. Disabling on Instagram is not deactivating on threads and vice versa(Threads Rolls).
When enabled, a green dot will appear next to the user’s profile picture, indicating that the user is online. To turn it on:
Go to the profile section in threads
Select the hamburger icon at the top right of the screen
Tap Privacy and the Online Status option
Choose between: Who , Followers, Followers you follow , none
This feature can be turned off by following the steps above and selecting the last option. Gadgets 360 staff was able to confirm availability on Threads for iOS.
Although the Threads introduced this feature for users to use, the comment section under Mosseri’s post was filled with requests for additional features. Some of the most requested features include real-time feeds, time-lapse events and the ability to send direct messages (DM) to other users.
