Meta AI Is Getting a New Memory Feature and Personalised Recommendations

Meta AI is receiving a few new enhancements, the company revealed on Monday. Meta aims for its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to provide a more customized experience to users, and the two new features will allow it to gain further insights about users. The first is a memory function that will enable the chatbot to retain specific information shared by the user in separate chats, while the second is a personalized recommendation feature that will allow Meta AI to scan the user’s social media profiles and in-app behaviors to suggest pertinent information.

Meta Introducing New Features for Its AI Chatbot

In a newsroom update, the social media powerhouse announced two new methods it is using to enhance Meta AI’s personalization for users. The company mentioned it has been testing a new memory feature that permits the chatbot to recall certain details about the user.

Memory in Meta AI can only be retained in individual conversations. Users can either directly instruct the AI to remember specific information, or it may automatically retain some information during discussions. For example, if a user requests the chatbot for breakfast suggestions and it proposes an omelette, the user can inform Meta AI that they are vegetarian, and it will remember this. In subsequent discussions, the AI will only offer vegetarian meal suggestions.

Meta did not disclose what types of information the AI can save, nor whether this includes sensitive information like financial or medical details. Nonetheless, users will be alerted whenever the chatbot saves a new piece of information, and they will have the option to manually erase the memory. Memory in Meta AI is being rolled out to Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp for iOS and Android in the US and Canada.

The second feature enables the chatbot to gather information about the user to produce tailored recommendations. The social media giant emphasized that the information will be sourced from user profiles on Facebook and Instagram, as well as their in-app activities such as viewing Reels, liking and commenting on content, and more.

Describing how the feature would operate, the update indicated that if a user requests suggestions for a fun family activity on the weekend, Meta AI can determine the user’s home location from Facebook, review recent Reels to identify activities the user may enjoy, and use information from the memory function to recommend a music concert. This feature will be accessible on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram in the US and Canada.
