Facebook parent Meta’s “Community Notes,” akin to the one implemented on Elon Musk-owned social media platform X, will not pertain to paid advertisements when they launch later this year, a source with knowledge of the situation informed Reuters on Thursday. Community Notes on Meta Platforms will be available for organic content, according to a source. Organic content refers to posts that Meta has not been compensated to promote.
Elements of the initiative may still be altered, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, which was the first to disclose the news, noting that brand and influencer organic posts may not be included in Community Notes when they initially become available.
“We are transitioning to Community Notes over the next few months in the United States and, as with any new product launch, we will consistently assess and refine it throughout the year,” a spokesperson for Meta stated in a message.
Any claims regarding how the product will function beyond what has already been officially shared are mere conjecture, a spokesperson for Meta stated.
In Meta’s most significant revision of its strategy for managing political content, the firm terminated its US fact-checking program last week and revealed plans for a system of “Community Notes” ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump’s swearing-in. The social media company intends to begin introducing “Community Notes” in the US over the coming months and enhance the model throughout the year.
