WhatsApp for iOS Reportedly Testing AR Capabilities for Call Effects and Filters in Beta

WhatsApp for iOS is testing a new feature that uses augmented reality (AR), according to a feature analyst. It is said that the feature will increase the reliability of video calls on the site, and users can adjust the features such as lighting conditions and environments. Available via beta update, the feature also includes the ability to add touch filters that change the image in real-time and a dedicated low-light mode.

WhatsApp Update

According to WABetaInfo’s feature tracker, AR support was first seen in July in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.24.16.7. After the WhatsApp beta for iOS version 24.15.10.70 was leaked via the TestFlight app, it has also arrived in the iOS version.

According to the shared image, WhatsApp’s new AR features include dynamic face filters. Users can change the appearance, such as the color of the video feed. It is also called a background editing tool that allows users to delete the background or replace it with the default background provided by instant messaging background.

In addition, the beta update of WhatsApp for iOS also includes two special features: Touch Up and Small Light. While it’s said to be the first to add a facial filter to remove impurities and smooth skin similar to the facial beauty filters found on smartphones, it says the latter to increase visibility in low-light areas.

The tracking feature indicates that this new feature is still in development, and only beta testers signed up through Apple’s TestFlight program can access it. It may be rolled out to other users in the coming weeks.

Other New Features

In addition to the development of augmented reality, WhatsApp has expanded its collection of stickers by introducing GIPHY-friendly add-ons. Users can also search for related attachments without leaving the app. Additionally, the custom sticker maker introduced on iOS in January is now available on Android.

If users still can’t find the right sticker from the library, they can simply create their own sticker using Meta AI – a chat assistant (AI) available in Meta Platforms apps like WhatsApp and Instagram.
