WhatsApp Reportedly Working on a Feature That Will Let Users Mention Contacts in Status Updates

WhatsApp for Android is getting a new feature that will allow users to mention others in their status updates, according to a feature analyst. The status update is considered private so only the sender and users can see it. The function of this feature is said to be similar to Instagram stories, where the user is told about the status update. It is worth noting that the instant messaging platform also works on a meta-language mode feature.

WhatsApp’s official update mentions the feature

According to WABetaInfo’s feature tracking post, this feature was discovered in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.20.3. This feature is not currently available, so users enrolled in the Google Beta program cannot test it.

According to the screenshot shared by the developer, the new feature affects the status update process. Currently, this feature does not allow users to tag others. Of course, it is said that with this update, users will be able to tag saved contacts. Screenshot calls this section “Expression”.

The quotation mark represented by “@” can be found in the text field before the submit button. Another image shows the information about the feature, which says that the user will receive a message from the user indicating that it has been sent. We are supposed to get notifications for that. Once mentioned, users can see the status and can also share it.

After updating the status, the username listed below the username will appear. But since this feature is private, only the user and the mentioned person can see it. In this way, users can individually mention the person they want to show the status, without knowing the others.

Separately, WhatsApp also said it is working on a meta language AI feature. The feature is said to come with artificial intelligence (AI) two-way voice mode and multiple language options. Some say it’s American, some say it’s British. In addition, the report claims that Meta will also add the voices of several public figures, although their names have not been revealed.
