Gemini AI assistant is now receiving support for an extension that enables it to effortlessly handle a multitude of tasks on smartphones. Named the Utilities extension, this innovative feature was unveiled during the Google I/O. It allows users to manage first-party apps and functions like alarm, timer, volume control, camera, and more. The Mountain View-based tech giant is gradually releasing the extension. It may take a few weeks before all Android device users can access this feature. Gemini Utilities Extension
Since its inception as an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant for Android devices, Gemini has been missing some key features that are readily available with Google Assistant. For instance, it is unable to open apps, take photos with the phone’s camera, or set an alarm. To address this problem, Google introduced a new Utilities extension earlier this year. In its support pages, the tech giant has announced that the extension is now being rolled out to users.
Nonetheless, there are certain constraints.
The functionality can only be accessed through the Gemini mobile app on Android smartphones. In order for the feature to function properly, users need to have Gemini established as their default virtual assistant. Moreover, the Utilities extension currently functions solely with prompts in English language. Furthermore, considering that the feature is being introduced gradually, certain users may need to be patient as they await its availability. With the help of this extension, Gemini AI assistant gains the ability to handle various tasks even on the lock screen.
Some tasks you can do on the device include setting and silencing alarms, starting and stopping timers, activating or deactivating features like the flashlight, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, and Battery Saver mode, checking the device’s volume and battery level, powering off or rebooting the device, and much more. Google has also disclosed that the extension will enable the AI assistant to execute numerous actions with just one prompt. It has the ability to open websites, applications, and the settings menu. Moreover, Gemini can also effortlessly launch the Camera app, snap a picture, or take a screenshot.
This extension will provide Gemini with the capability to manage media playback, including functions like pause, play, and navigating to the previous or next media. This method is compatible solely with the native media player. Please note that it may not be compatible with apps like Spotify or Apple Music. Users will also have the option to set alarms and timers using this feature.
