WhatsApp is reported to be developing a new function for WhatsApp Web that will enable users to conduct a web search on shared images. The function, referred to as Search on Web, is expected to allow users to perform a reverse image search using Google without leaving the messaging app. This function could be beneficial in reducing the dissemination of false information and safeguarding users from succumbing to online fraud. Significantly, the company began testing this function on WhatsApp for Android in November.
WhatsApp Web Could Get a Reverse Image Search Feature
As per the WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the Search on Web function is presently in development for the web version of the instant messaging service. However, the function is not currently visible, meaning that beta testers won’t be able to test it. There is no indication that the Meta-owned platform is creating a similar feature for its iOS application.
According to a screenshot released by the feature tracker, the function becomes available when an image has been opened within WhatsApp Web. Clicking on the vertical dotted menu icon located next to the star, forward, and download icons will reveal the new function. The “Search on Web” option appears between the Reply Privately and Report choices.
While the working of the reverse image search function was not demonstrated by the feature tracker, it suggested that upon selecting the option, WhatsApp would seek the user’s permission to upload the image to Google. Importantly, once the user consents, the subsequent process will be managed by the search engine, and WhatsApp will not have access to the data. This information is reportedly conveyed clearly to the user when asking for consent.
Subsequently, users can view the image on Google’s web client, much like a standard reverse image search operates. This web search feature for images could serve as a crucial tool to shield platform users from fraud and misleading information. If users receive an image that makes exaggerated claims or appears to be false, they can utilize the “Search on Web” function to check for similar images online and gain a better understanding of their context.
