Elon Musk’s xAI is said to be gearing up to release a standalone app as early as next month. xAI may have been a newcomer in the artificial intelligence (AI) realm, but it has swiftly made significant progress to bridge the distance. During the past couple of months, the AI company has introduced a feature that allows functions to be called within its extensive language models (LLMs), unveiled an application programming interface (API) for developers, and is said to be experimenting with a complimentary version of the AI model. Currently, there is a report indicating that the company is considering competing with OpenAI by developing an application similar to ChatGPT.
Elon Musk’s latest creation, xAI, is reportedly said to receive its own standalone application.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk is aiming to develop Grok AI as a standalone product. According to sources familiar with the situation, it has been reported by the publication that xAI is considering the possibility of introducing a standalone chatbot application for Grok, reminiscent of ChatGPT.
At the moment, Grok AI is exclusively accessible through X (formerly referred to as Twitter) and is accessible to subscribers of X Premium and Premium+. A recent report indicated that xAI intends to launch a no-cost version of the AI model. The standalone application may be included in the identical plan.
The development of a new app and API for developers reflects Musk’s vision of expanding revenue streams through innovative AI solutions. Particularly, the company has gone as far as offering free tokens as incentives to attract developers. The plan appears to focus on extending the reach of Grok to a wide audience and integrating its capabilities into various software and apps.
The WSJ report suggested that Musk’s overarching goal is to compete with OpenAI and provide products and services that can serve as a credible alternative across all areas utilized by ChatGPT. Although Grok doesn’t include certain features like native image generation, voice support, and agentic AI capabilities, major competitors like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and others already provide these features.
The rivalry between Musk and OpenAI has a long history. Musk notably took legal action against OpenAI earlier this year for breaching their agreement to remain a nonprofit organization. The creator of ChatGPT addressed the claims by dismissing them as “groundless and exaggerated. “
The report emphasized the two key benefits that set xAI apart from other AI chatbots. Initially, Grok has been carefully taught using only the public posts available on X. This specialized training enables the chatbot to converse in a more natural manner and grants it access to the most current information, setting it apart from other LLMs. Additionally, Musk is utilizing Tesla to develop the xAI models.
