OpenAI revealed an official phone number for ChatGPT on Wednesday. Individuals in qualifying areas can call this number to reach the company’s chatbot and converse with it through voice. Furthermore, those living in other parts of the globe can save the contact and message it on WhatsApp to engage with the generative artifici al intelligence (AI) chatbot. At present, voice call duration is limited to 15 minutes each month, but the AI company indicated that this could change in the future.
OpenAI Now Lets People Make Phone Calls to ChatGPT
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI shared the new phone number for ChatGPT. The number is presented as the vanity phone number 1-800-ChatGPT (+1-800-242-8478). Vanity phone numbers correspond to letters on a keypad (A, B, and C correspond to 2; D, E, and F correspond to 3, etc. ) to create a number that is easy to remember. The ‘800’ code signifies that the number is toll-free and that callers will not incur costs. This service is presently only available in Canada and the United States.
OpenAI emphasized that users will be limited to 15 minutes of call time each month for now. The company can, nevertheless, modify access and limitations in the future. Those living outside of the aforementioned countries can still connect with ChatGPT using the phone number, but exclusively on WhatsApp.
on the official app or the website. Currently, the WhatsApp extension of the chatbot solely accommodates text for both input and output. Additionally, other functionalities such as Search, Canvas, and DALL-E image generation will not be accessible on WhatsApp or via phone calls.
Interestingly, OpenAI mentioned that the phone call feature does not need smartphones and operates just as effectively on feature phones.
OpenAI has been vigorously working to establish ChatGPT as the primary AI chatbot platform for users. The company has already collaborated with Microsoft and Apple to provide its large language models (LLMs). ChatGPT has also been made available on Windows and MacOS this year. This latest initiative is likely an effort by the AI company to reach the rural population that either has limited data to utilize or has not yet interacted with the chatbot.
